Activity3.10 Looking at ALT text

Imagine that you have to use a screen reader to access a website. How easy would it be to use the site if you could not see the images on the screen? Would a website make as much sense if the graphics were turned off?

Turn off images in your web browser to experience this. In Internet Explorer you can do it via Tools – Internet Options – Advanced. Scroll down the list to the Multimedia section and uncheck the box to Show Images. Visit some sites such as the BBC website. How easy is it to navigate the site without the images? Is there enough information to describe the images to you?

Discuss this with a partner. Make a screenshot of one of the pages and annotate it.

Remember to turn images back on when you have finished!
