activity1.4 Getting Started

Gather as wide a variety of documents for different purposes and audiences as you can find: magazines, leaflets, brochures, pamphlets, company reports, catalogues, newsletters. For once, don't throw away junk mail but take a look at the layout of the enclosures.

Ask family and friends to save theirs too and pick up free leaflets at health centres, stations, post offices, council buildings, museums, galleries, the school careers' service, local print shops and charity outlets.

Your collection will contribute to a communal class resource for research into the range of organisations that produced the documents, their target readership and their design styles. Identifying these features will help you plan the design of your own document to ensure that it is fit for purpose and best meets the needs of your intended readership.
